< Prev <Home> Next >Home security is an ever growing concern for many people. For someone with sight, when they are home and someone drives in, they can look out their window and see if they recognize the person. For someone with little or no vision, this isn't really an option. For this reason, and others, we invested in some cameras a couple of years back so that if I was home and heard something in the yard, I could text a family member or friend to check into it for me...be my eye spy!
There have been break ins more and more frequently in our area and it made me very thankful to have at least some kind of home monitoring system for my place. There are a lot of options out there but, for me, it doesn't just mean researching the best cameras, I need to make sure the app is accessible for me as well. I have been very happy with the entire Blink system of home security accessories, which was the system we decided to go with.
The Blink iOs and android apps are completely accessible for screen readers; outdoor cameras and mounts are perfect to set up all over our property; and the indoor mini cameras with the addition of the pan-tilt mount allow you to have a full view of everything in your home.
The cameras have tons of features, some of which include two-way audio, motion sensing, temperature detection, and two year battery life for the outdoor ones. The app is very user friendly and all of the features are accessible for screen readers. Even the little arrows that control the pan-tilt mount work for a screen reader. So even though you can't see where it is facing, you can move it around with no sighted help.
In addition, a feature that is probably most often inaccessible because of the nature of the feature, is the scan to add device feature; and even that works seamlessly with screen readers in the Blink app! When an app has features like this working where many other apps have failed, you know that accessibility is high on their priority list.
Even for sighted users, I feel that it is important to support apps that have users with disabilities in mind when they design their app. It may not affect you directly, but the more people that support accessible apps, the more it will encourage that kind of design. I definitely give the entire line of Blink home security accessories (including the app) a techtastic rating!
