Spring is here and nobody loves their iced coffee more than me! With iced coffee, however, comes having to make ice, which isn't an easy task even when you can see not to spill water on the floor. I have tried dozens of different ice cube trays trying to find one that works for me as a blind person, and they all failed. Not to mention, they all made teeny tiny cubes that just aren't worth the effort.

When I finally found these trays I was of course sceptical of how they could possibly work. Unlike other trays that I had tried, this tray didn't have a lid but instead had a rubber flap that covered the cubes. When I got the tray, I truly thought it was a joke but my scientific mind had to see if this tray actually did what it said it did.

Now I'm not one of those people that will try to use an item and then flip out and post a bad review when it doesn't work, without making sure I'm following exactly how the item is intended to be used. In my search, I came across a review on the product page of someone going through the steps of how to use the tray, so I followed those steps. I filled the tray, put the rubber flap over top, ran my finger around the edge to seal it, and then tipped it 45 degrees towards the corner to drain the excess channel...remaining sceptical at this point.

It was when I tipped the tray to drain the excess channel that I truly became curious. I saw that the water drained from the channel, but then no more water came out and I could still feel that the tray was full by the weight of it. So I tipped it further; and further; and further to straight up and down...and then right upside down...and the flap stayed sealed! You can imagine my surprise, but the simple scientific design of these trays used that water lock seal to ensure that the water stayed in their little cubes. I couldn't believe I finally found a tray that not only prevented spills when carrying flat, but didn't spill even if I were to trip or lose my balance and tip them sideways.

I have now ordered four of these, and although they are more than trays you would get at the dollar store, the freedom of being able to make my own ice is completely worth it. The trays themselves have a bit of a plastic scent but it doesn't transfer to the ice at all. Using them takes a bit of getting used to and my family still hasn't quite figured out how to fill them properly so I am on official ice duty, but I give these trays a completely positive review!
